SIEM REAP DISCOVERY 4 DAYS

  • Duration:4 days
  • Destinations: Siem Reap
300 USD

The life-support system for the temples of Angkor, Siem Reap (see-em ree-ep; សៀមរាប) was always destined for great things. It has reinvented itself as the epicentre of chic Cambodia, with everything from backpacker party pads to hip hotels, world-class wining and dining, and sumptuous spas.

This is good news for the long-suffering Khmers riding the wave, but it can make the town a little bling in places. While it's not exactly authentic, just a short distance away lies Siem Reap Province and the real Cambodia of rural beauty. Explore floating villages and rare-bird sanctuaries or just cycle (or quad bike or pony trek) through the paddies as an antidote to the bustle of town.

Angkor is a place to be savoured, not rushed, and this is the base from which to plan your adventures. Still think three days at the temples is enough? Think again, with Siem Reap on the doorstep.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: SIEM REAP ARRIVAL

Flight: TBA

Upon arrival at Siem Reap airport, you will be welcomed and transferred to the hotel for check-in. Your room is available anytime from 14.00. Early check in subject to room availability. Meals on your own. Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 2: SIEM REAP - ANGKOR WAT - ANGKOR THOM - TA PROHM (B)

Meet your guide this morning to discover the marvelous temple of Angkor Wat, the world heritage site whose soaring tours and extraordinary bas-relief are not to be missed. It is considered one of the most amazing monuments ever conceived by man and was erected in the 12th century (1112-1152) in honor of Vishnu.

In the afternoon, visit the Great City of Angkor Thom, beginning at the southern gate’s famous Bayon temple built in the 12th and 13th centuries and dedicated to Buddhism. Bayon comprises 54 gigantic towers featuring 216 smiling faces of Avalokitesvara. Then visit the 350-meter-long Elephant Terrace, which was used as a giant reviewing stand for public ceremonies and a base for the King’s grand audience hall, and see the raised terrace of the Leper King, built in the 12th century and presenting many of the city’s most admired Apsara sculptures. On the way home visit Ta Prohm, a Buddhist temple of the 12th century, abandoned and alive with vegetation. Meals on your own. Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 3: SIEM REAP - KOMPONG KLEANG FLOATING VILLAGE (B / L)

In the morning, leave for Kompong Khleang, a village 40km from Siem Reap and as yet bypassed by mass tourism. All the houses are on stilts offering an exceptional natural environment with breathtaking views of floodplains, rice fields and water vistas as far as the eye can see. Walk through the village meeting the locals and a family who raises crocodiles. Afterwards, travel by boat over the canals to a large lake where Vietnamese people live when they are displaced from their homes because of the seasons. Return to the village and have a picnic lunch in a villager’s home. Return to Siem Reap. Dinner on your own. Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 4: SIEM REAP - DEPARTURE (B) - NO GUIDE

Free time at leisure before transfer without guide to airport for your flight back home or to next destination. Room is at your disposal until noon time only. Meals on your own.

Departure flight: TBA
